Tubeless sealant is what makes tubeless work. Here’s what matters.

What It Does

Liquid inside tire. Coats everything. When you puncture, sealant plugs the hole. Keeps riding.

Handles small punctures automatically. Thorns, glass, small debris. Bigger stuff still flats you.

Types

Latex-based. Stan’s is the classic. Works well, dries out over time.

Synthetic. Orange Seal, others. Different chemistry. Some last longer. Some seal bigger holes.

How Much

2-4 ounces per tire usually. Road uses less. Mountain uses more. Check manufacturer recommendations.

Add through valve stem. Remove core, pour in, replace core. Simple.

Maintenance

Dries out every few months. Add fresh sealant regularly. Some people check every 2-3 months. I do every tire change.

Shake bottle before using. Particles settle. Shaking redistributes.

Problems

Big cuts won’t seal. Sidewall damage won’t seal. Know the limits.

Mess when changing tires. Dried sealant builds up inside. Scrape out occasionally.

Best Sealants

Stan’s Race for road. Thinner, faster sealing.

Orange Seal Endurance for longevity. Less topping off.

Muc-Off for colder temps. Doesn’t freeze as easily.

Worth It

Absolutely. Fewer flats, better ride feel. Small hassle of maintenance pays off.
