Frame size matters more than any other bike fit decision. Here’s how to figure out yours.

The Old Method
Stand over the top tube. Inch or two of clearance. Works as a starting point but doesn’t tell the whole story.
The Measurements That Matter
Inseam: measure from floor to crotch. This determines standover.
Torso length: base of neck to top of hip. Affects reach more than you’d think.
Arm length: shoulder to wrist. Combined with torso, determines how stretched out you’ll feel.
Size Charts
Every brand has sizing charts. They’re helpful but not gospel. A 54cm Trek feels different than a 54cm Specialized.
Stack and reach numbers tell more than sizes do. Stack is vertical height. Reach is horizontal length. Compare these across brands.
Common Mistakes
Going too big because you’re used to it. Smaller with longer stem often fits better.
Ignoring reach for standover. You ride in the cockpit, not over the top tube.
Pro Fit
Worth the $200-300 for serious riders. They measure everything. Adjust cleat position, saddle height, stem length, handlebar width.
Can turn a mediocre fit into a perfect one. Or confirm you need a different size frame entirely.
Quick Check
Ride for 30+ minutes. Any numbness, pain, or discomfort? Something’s wrong. Fit should feel natural.
